German Pharmacy Museum

Short facts

  • Heidelberg

Experience pharmacy and its history from antiquity to the present day at Heidelberg Castle.

With up to 600,000 visitors a year, it is one of the most visited museums in Germany. The world's most extensive and highest-quality collection on the history of pharmacy is presented in ten outstanding interior rooms of the castle - the Ottheinrich Building, the Ludwig Building, and the domed Apothecary Tower. Two interesting and vivid themes form the common thread running through the exhibition: "The Pharmacy as a Workplace" and "The Pharmaceutical".

Offers with and without reservation

Even a simple tour through the rooms makes the heart beat faster. Those who want to learn more about the exhibited treasures will find excitingly readable information boards in German and English.

Audio guides can be borrowed in German, English, French, Italian, and Japanese.

In the "Children's Pharmacy" area, little museum visitors can mix teas. Visitors young and old can also test their sense of smell at the scent station.

The overview tour "Mandrake and Unicorn" as well as around 20 different themed tours (from stories about the plague to the magic of love), event modules (such as medicinal wine tasting, incense burning, etc.) and practical modules (including ointment making, pill making, tea mixing, etc.) can be offered to groups of up to 50 people by appointment. The museum rooms, in cooperation with the castle catering, have also proven themselves many times for evening receptions of up to 150 people.

One of the most beautiful museum stores in Germany can be found at the end of the museum tour.
