Karlstorbahnhof – A Home for Culture, Creativity & Community
Under one roof, the cultural center brings together several local associations: kulturcafé, Freier Theaterverein Heidelberg, and the Eine-Welt-Zentrum. The building is also home to the Karlstorkino, run by the Medienforum Heidelberg.
Karlstorbahnhof’s programming has received numerous awards – including several wins of the nationwide APPLAUS Award for Best Live Music Programs. Annual highlights include the Carambolage Cabaret & Comedy Festival, the Queer Festival Heidelberg, the Heidelberger Theatertage, and Enjoy Jazz – one of Europe’s largest jazz festivals, which was founded right here.
More than just a venue, Karlstorbahnhof is committed to creating a respectful, inclusive space and taking a clear stand against all forms of discrimination. Its goal is to reflect the diversity of society both on stage and behind the scenes – and to give a platform to marginalized voices through artistic expression and collaboration.
Having outgrown its original location in Heidelberg’s Old Town, the center moved into a brand-new, modern space in Südstadt in October 2022. The City of Heidelberg made this possible by transforming a former military riding hall into a vibrant new venue. Today, the new Karlstorbahnhof features a large concert hall, the TiK theatre space, a club, a cinema, two seminar rooms, and the central gathering place known simply as The Zentrale – a welcoming combination of foyer, event space, and café-bar.
