Suedstadt

In today's Suedstadt, around 4,900 people live on just under 173 hectares - 70 percent of which are built on - in a carefully planned and very popular residential district with mostly two-story single-family homes and plenty of private green space.

For decades, large parts of the district were used for military purposes by the American armed forces, which left completely in 2013. Diverse neighborhoods are now being created on the sites - with affordable housing, high-quality open and recreational spaces, such as "Andere" Park, which opened in 2022, an attractive range of cultural and leisure activities, and space for innovative companies as well as research and scientific institutions. The Bergfriedhof cemetery, established in 1842, also enriches Suedstadt and is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany.
