Heidelberg University
Alte Universität (Old University)
Text books here are meant to be "semper apertus - always open", and the research work of the Ruperto Carola University, founded in 1386, is "geared to the future, yet grounded in tradition".
These requirements have been fulfilled in scientific practice by many prominent scholars over the centuries. Great names characterize the history of Germany's oldest university. From Hegel to Jaspers, from Bunsen to Bosch. Around 30,000 students are currently enrolled in 12 faculties and 14 special research areas. Core competencies lie in the field of life science. In respectable rankings, Heidelberg's university occupies top positions in medicine, life sciences, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Law and the many "small" subjects, such as archaeology, Chinese studies, ethnology or the South Asia Institute are also excellently established.
That 25% of the local student body consists of foreign students is evidence of the high esteem in which the university is held internationally. The combination of excellent teaching and excellent research has paved the way for the inclusion of Ruperto Carola University in the circle of planned elite universities. This gives Heidelberg's university the great opportunity of securing its prominent position among the competition in the international science field in the future too.
